Hello! I write poetry for The Donkey Sanctuary's website and will be coming to Int'l Donkey Week 2011! I fell in love with Chester and Teddy a few weeks ago on your Facebook page (where I have also posted this poem) and here it is, with love and much gratitude for the work in Chalford, a lovely town!

Special Delivery

In the town of Chalford
Where lanes are narrow and steep
You'll hear the gentle clip, clip clopping
Of a Donkey's tiny feet.
Loaded down with groceries
They follow the ancient tracks
Like devotees of ley lines
They carry magic on their backs.
It's quite a sight to wake up to
As they greet you at your door
Serving those residents who don't get out much
Or who need a friend on all fours.
Always known to bring a smile
News, supplies and cheeses!
They are the anchors of the seasons
To human lives mayhaps in pieces.
The folks who wait for this equine chivalry
And their Chalford Donkeys delivery
They may not rest
They may not sleep
Knowing Chester and Teddy
Will all their promises keep.
Menders of the seasons
These two Donkeys are to all
Sharing the beauty of service
Along each straight or winding road
They understand the vulnerability of hope
Good will is just a Donk's station.
And after all their work is done
They rest back together again
Knowing that while there's still those in need
Their work is never done
For in a Donkey's eyes and heart
Real beauty is anticipation.

Hello! I have changed one line of this poem near the end, I think Chester and Teddy would approve!

Regards and Love,
Jenny Bates

For Chester and Teddy, the Chalford Donkeys.
